My Reflection on Digital Storytelling
As I reflect back on everything I have learned in EME 5050, I immediately think of the digital storytelling example I created as part of the culminating project for this course. I remember at the beginning of this course, I was very overwhelmed as I looked through the syllabus and saw all of the different technologies we would be using frequently during the course, especially that I would be required to create a digital storytelling example of my own. I believe that the reason I was so overwhelmed by this course’s requirements was because of my inexperience with these technologies. My lack of experience filled me with a lack of confidence in completing all of the assigned tasks.
When the time came to start thinking about my own digital storytelling example for first grade students, I was still a little unsure of how it was going to look. However, by this time in the course, I had personal experience with using Prezi, which was the online presentation tool I would use to map my story. I was also able to read through many resources and previous student examples embedded in our weekly course modules. I felt that the more I educated myself on digital storytelling through Prezi tutorials, course readings, and various hands-on experiences, the more confident I became. This project no longer seemed impossible.
As I started creating my digital storytelling example, it was amazing to see how everything I learned all tied together. As I finished the assignment, I felt very confident in my creation and couldn’t wait to share it. I also felt that with the proper guidance, first graders would also be able to create their own digital storytelling projects. It is amazing how much my attitude changed towards using these technologies in my life as well as with students in my classroom.
Overall, I felt a great sense of accomplishment with my creation and I learned from this experience. I learned more about myself as an educator and as a student at the same time. I believe that digital storytelling is a great way to provide authentic learning experiences in the classroom with students. It allows students to interact with digital tools as well as spark creativity in their learning. Most importantly, IT IS FUN!
