About Alexis Huether:
Hello fellow educators, friends, and other followers. My name is Alexis Huether and I am a first grade teacher for Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) in Orlando, FL. This is my third year teaching overall and I absolutely love what I do. I had the privilege of teaching Kindergarten my first year and I immediately fell in love with the school and the primary age group. I have been teaching first grade for the last two years at this same school and I feel that this is right where I am meant to be. I love being able to teach every subject area throughout the day and create a close bond with my 16 students. I learn new ideas and strategies from other educators all the time. I also learn new things about my students daily, which helps me to adapt instruction to their individual learning needs. Because of all the wonderful things I have personally seen and learned through my classroom experiences, I feel that it is only fair that I share them with you.
I am a strong believer in discovery learning and student-centered learning, and feel that there is a connection between the two. When students are interacting with each other and actively engaged in hands-on activities, it allows them to discover upon the knowledge themselves. Instead of just forcing the information onto them, they develop and understanding from their experiences and from the experiences of others. The reflections and collaborative discussions of those experiences is what truly impacts their education and academic success. I am a very positive person and want students to feel the same way about their learning.
Something interesting about me is that before I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education at the University of Central Florida (UCF), I was actually on track to graduate with a degree in Accounting. In one of my business courses at UCF, I was required to do a service learning project. My team decided to participate in Junior Achievement (JA). I was placed in a first grade classroom for my JA lessons. (Coincidence?) I loved teaching in the classroom and realized that maybe I wanted to try something different. Within the next year, I changed my major to Elementary Education. I can honestly say that this was one of the best decisions I have ever made. In 2012, I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Business. I am currently continuing my education to receive a Masters in Elementary Education. One of the biggest lessons I have learned throughout this whole experience is: It is never too late to change your mind in life!
My hope is that this blog will inspire future and current educators. Here is a list of some of the main topics I will address in my blog:
- Relevant educational research
- Teaching strategies that have personally worked/not worked for me in the classroom and reflections on these experiences
- The importance of technology in elementary education and new ways to get students involved
- The importance of differentiating instruction
- Marzano
- Common Core State Standards
- Helpful resources for teachers – I have included a few that I use on a weekly basis for planning.
